Getting to Bruny Island
( See this Google Map for many helpful marked locations - remember you may not have phone reception on some places on Bruny Island)
Bruny Island is situated off the south-east coast of Tasmania, Australia, about 40 km (45 minutes drive) south of Hobart. The island is separated from the Tasmanian mainland by the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and accessed by a vehicular ferry (two during peak periods). These depart from Kettering and operate at regular intervals throughout the day. For up-to-date information, please see the Bruny Island Sealink Ferry website. The ferry crossing takes approximately 15 minutes, during which time passengers may get out of their vehicles and admire the views and possibly seabirds, seals and dolphins.
There is no need to book for the ferry (in fact bookings cannot yet be made) but you are requested to arrive at the ferry terminal at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. During busy times (e.g. Christmas, Easter and other public holidays) the ferry may break its schedule and offer a shuttle service between ferry terminals to cope with the increased traffic. During these periods you may experience longer waiting times and we advise that you arrive at the ferry terminal and wait in the queue until the ferry crew instructs you to embark. Loading lanes are provided at the ferry terminal at both Kettering and Bruny Island and standard sized vehicles are expected to fill the right hand lanes first (the left lanes are usually reserved for large vehicles such as trucks and campervans or for overflow during busy periods).
The ferry fare is currently $33/standard vehicle ($38 for public holidays) and is valid for the return trip. The ferry crew takes the fee on the way over and there is no need to show your ticket on the return journey for which there is no time restriction. The ferry trip takes about 15 minutes and it is another 45 minutes drive to the Inala property.
Alternatives to self driving and the ferry
Inala Nature Tours can provide vehicle-based Hobart transfers for an additional cost or clients can consider a light plane transfer from Hobart to the Bruny Island airstrip where they will be collected by their driver/guide.
Driving on Bruny Island and directions to Inala from the Bruny Island Ferry
On Bruny Island, guests may drive their own vehicle or a hire vehicle (provided it is approved for travel on gravel roads).
Inala is situated approximately 45 minutes drive (and 47 km) from the ferry terminal (the entire journey from Hobart City to Inala is about 2 hours).
After disembarking the ferry at Roberts Point on Bruny Island, drive down the main road not turning off anywhere. You will pass over the narrow neck that separates north and south Bruny islands, and through the township of Alonnah before reaching a T-junction at the township of Lunawanna (this part of the trip will take about 40 minutes and 43 km if driving directly). Turn left at the T-junction into the Cloudy Bay Road.
The Inala Private Reserve is situated at 320 Cloudy Bay Road, 3.2 km from the LunawannaT-junction. The property is marked by a large Inala sign on the right-hand side of the road. The office/reception is located on the left-hand side of the driveway about 20 m from the property entrance. This is visible from the road. Please stop at the office to let us know you have arrived. If the office is unattended, continue on straight ahead and you will find both the cottages signposted as you go along the driveway.
Inala Cottage is reached via a well indicated turnoff on the right, just at the end of the paddock (field) near the office.
The main access to Inala Cottage is via the door on the front veranda, not the external door facing the BBQ area and garage.
To get to Nairana, pass the turn off to Inala Cottage on your right, and continue until you round corners, first to the right and then to the left, and climb a small hill at the top of which are some buildings. Nairana Cottage is the first unit on your left and access is via a ramp next to the carport.
